INTRODUCTION

The uniqueness of this Master of Social Work programme, which was established in 2007, The evidence-based, action and intervention oriented practices are established through - teaching-learning process, field-based learning and internships that guide the students to act as social change agents and work social justice. The comprehensive understanding of macro system knowledge framework, along with the understanding of contextual and ground-realities, the integration of which enable the students to effectively initiate change and development at the micro level.The global social work and transnational social work framework empower the students to think globally and act locally.


VISION

Empowering the young women as change makers in the society through networking with various agencies, inculcating professional values and attributes which lead to the holistic development of the society.

 

MISSION

ü  To motivate the students towards social concern and problems through inculcation of democratic and humanitarian values.

ü  Sensitize the various issues in the society for the empowerment of marginalized and vulnerable people.

ü  Applying skills in social work practice and social work research in different fields for achieving desirable changes and development.

ü  To facilitate entrepreneurship and career guidance through activity-based learning.

ü  To create global competencies through internship programme.

 

OBJECTIVES

After the completion of the Social Work Course, our students will be able to

 

ü  To educate the students the importance of Social work, and the role of a social worker in the various settings of importance to the society.

ü  To make the students inculcate a strong interest in serving the needy population on completion of training.

ü  To provide knowledge of the causes of psychiatric problems methods and Intervention, Treatment and Rehabilitation.

ü  To equip students with appropriate skills to become Medical social workers, Psychiatric social workers, counsellors, and social welfare administrators & community organizers.

ü  To educate and enlighten the student’s personal and professional development through accepting challenges and rendering need based services to the community.

Greetings from the Department of Social Work,

 

Social work, a professional course guides individual and societal growth .It’s not one which gives mere financial aid but much more –Holistic growth and Integrated formation.

With vision of providing quality job oriented education, extension of higher education and focusing on women empowerment, Holy Cross College- Nagercoil has established the department of social work in 2007.It comprises of two specific areas of specialization.

ü      Medical and psychiatric Social Work

ü      Community Development

The students are trained to plan and execute an extensive range of social services, social welfare activities. The curriculum has three important components-theory, fieldwork and research. It enables the students to acquire necessary knowledge of sociology, psychology, philosophy and methods of social work, and practical experience in scientific social research. To facilitate the above complex learning process, the training programme also includes independent study, lectures, seminars, research and concurrent and block fieldwork training. The department considers education as a means for social change and transformation with societal commitment.

The observation visits aim to make the students to understand the skills of systematic observation, critical analysis and develop a spirit of inquiry. Study the agency- its functions, activities, services rendered.Analysis of the regional social system, the approaches, and the strategies of intervention used by the government and non-government organizations.

The Community Organization Programmes aim to make the students to understand the series of activities at the community level .Create desired improvement in the social well being of individuals, groups and neighborhoods. Mobilize the resources to create a suitable ground for the basic needs completion and eradication of problems. The block placement aim to make the students to understand the role of the agency in addressing current social realities. Pursue an experience of working as a trained social worker in an agency. Seek and consolidate skills relevant to the profession of social work. Consolidate the learning over the semesters through the process of continuous engagement in the field of specialization.
