Greetings!!
Welcome to the department of Physics at Holy Cross College (Autonomous), Nagercoil. Department of Physics is one of the largest departments in Holy Cross College with 11 faculty members and 144 undergraduate, 50 masters, 10 MPhil scholars and many research scholars. Our continuous commitment to our students is helping them to learn, grow, develop, and achieve their goals in their pursuit to excel in their professional career.
The
department was established in the year 1966 and doctoral programmes in key
areas of Theoretical Physics and
Experimental Physics. The department
strives to provide a conductive environment for the students to develop
analytical and practical skills and apply them to real world problems. To
motivate the students, the department organizes regularly workshop, National
& International Conferences periodically.
We welcome you to the Physics Department as undergraduate or post graduate or research student and we hope to be part of your success.
Vision
Holistic
development of students with good professional standard in physics through
academic excellence integrated with ethical values, empowered to meet
challenges as they embark on careers
Contributing
to the development of knowledge and an innovation-based future.
Objectives
·
To
provide quality academic programmes in theoretical and practical physics and
produce graduates with exemplary competency in physics.
·
To
empower students with skill based education leading to success in career and
personal development.
·
To foster
a research environment, in which key scientific and technical innovation are
generated.
·
To
instill a sense of social responsibility in order to transform the world into a
better and more just place to live.
·
To evolve
strategies for the growth of the department towards excellence.
History
The
Department of physics was established in the year 1966 with the introduction of
the B.Sc programme for the young budding physicists. Physics being
attractive to many highly intellectually capable students the most sought for
M.Sc programme was launched in the year 1984. Through the years under the
guidance of animated heads the department having grown by leaps and bounds now
offers the M.Phil. Programme which was initiated in the year 2009 followed by
the Ph.D programme in the year 2010 and continues to promote academic
advancement through quality teaching and research. The thrust areas of the
research department of physics include theoretical and computational physics,
crystal growth, nanophysics, thin films and polymers.
