DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

INTRODUCTION

The Department of physics was established in the year 1966 with the introduction of the B.Sc programme for the young budding physicists. Physics being attractive to many highly intellectually capable students the most sought for M.Sc programme was launched in the year 1984. Through the years under the guidance of animated heads the department having grown by leaps and bounds now offers the M.Phil. Programme which was initiated in the year 2009 followed by the Ph.D programme in the year 2010 and continues to promote academic advancement through quality teaching and research. The thrust areas of the research department of physics include theoretical and computational physics, crystal growth, nanophysics, thin films and polymers.

VISION

Envisions training students for quality Physics education and holistic development empowered to meet challenges and embark on luxuriant careers.

MISSION

ü  To produce competent graduates infused with professionalism, ethical values and social responsibility.

ü  To prepare students to accentuate learning for life.

ü  To foster a research environment, to keep up with global development in science.

ü  To evolve strategies for the growth of the department towards excellence.

OBJECTIVES

After the completion of the Physics Course, our students will be able to

ü  To provide quality academic programmes in theoretical and practical physics

ü  Read, understand and interpret physical information – verbal, mathematical and graphical.

ü  Equip students in methodology related to Physics.

ü  Impart skills required to gather information from resources and use them.

ü  To give need-based education in physics of the highest quality at the undergraduate level.

From the HOD's Desk

Greetings from the Department of Physics,

Welcome to the department of Physics at Holy Cross College (Autonomous), Nagercoil. Department of Physics is one of the largest departments in Holy Cross College with 11 faculty members and 144 undergraduate, 50 masters, 10  MPhil scholars and many research scholars. Our continuous commitment to our students is helping them to learn, grow, develop, and achieve their goals in their pursuit to excel in their professional career.

The department was established in the year 1966 and doctoral programmes in key areas of  Theoretical Physics and Experimental Physics. The department strives to provide a conductive environment for the students to develop analytical and practical skills and apply them to real world problems. To motivate the students, the department organizes regularly workshop, National & International Conferences periodically.

We welcome you to the Physics Department as undergraduate or post graduate or research student and we hope to be part of your success.
