INTRODUCTION

College started functioning in 1965.The Department of Mathematics also started functioning with the induction of the PUC programme in the same year. So our Department celebrates its golden jubilee along with the College. The UG programme was introduced in 1966 and the PG programme in 1978.To meet the increasing demand of the Mathematics Programme the Self financed UG and PG programmes were started in 2010 and 2016 respectively. The Department has the proud history of conducting three Refresher Courses. Because of the tireless efforts of the faculty, our Department  is at the threshold of becoming a Research Centre.

OBJECTIVES

After the completion of the Mathematics Course, our students will be able to

ü  To improve the general knowledge and general awareness of the students.

ü  Acquire a strong foundation in various branches of mathematics.

ü  Develop problem solving skills and logical thinking.

ü  Apply the skills and knowledge gained, to real life situations and face competitive examinations with confidence.

ü  Sharpen their analytical thinking, logical deductions and rigor in reasoning.

ü  Understand the tools required to quantitatively analyse data and have the ability to access and communicate mathematical information.

ü  Acquire knowledge of recent developments in various branches of mathematics and participate in conferences / seminars / workshops etc. and thus pursue research.

    Mathematics expresses itself everywhere- in nature and in the technologies all around us. It is both aesthetically beautiful and tremendously powerful. Power of reasoning, abstract and critical thinking and problem solving ability are some of the qualities nurtured by mathematics.  It is the reservoir of systematism and patterns like connections, structures, regularities and rules. In our Department, we teach our students to represent these patterns with a language, to reason out, to prove and to find the truth. Proud to be learners of Mathematics and aspirants of tasting its rhythm in the reality of life, we march towards our Vision. May the Lord Almighty help us to be morally upright and spiritually inspired in all our endeavors.

Best Practices

• Every year an interclass mathematical quiz programme is organized and prizes are distributed to the winning teams.
• Mathematical puzzles are written on the notice board and the students are encouraged to solve them within a stipulated time.
• We grow indoor plants in the department as a small effort for a pollution free environment.

Endowment Lectures

Every year we organize two Endowment lectures namely, Dr. Krishnammal’s endowment lecture instituted by Dr. Krishnammal and Sr. Scholastica’s endowment lecture instituted by Hermana Gilt Arachi for the betterment of the students.

Seminars

Every year the department organizes national seminars on recent mathematical concepts and faculty and students from the neighboring colleges are also benefitted.

Association Meetings

Mathematics Association meetings are conducted each year for the benefit of the students and to develop their talents

• Ramanujan’s birthday is celebrated every year as “Mathematics Day”. The students speak on Ramanujan and his findings. They display various newspaper articles and posters on him.
• “Inventor’s Day” is also celebrated annually. Great mathematicians and their discoveries are discussed with Power Point presentations and documentaries.
• We have also inducted Yoga in our association meetings.

Extension Activities

• The students and the faculty have emotional experiences while visiting destitute homes, orphanages and mentally retarded homes during Christmas season every year. Students become socially aware about the plight of their less privileged brethren and entertain them by conducting cultural programmes.
